Well-being; noun
• the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy
Sounds like a pretty good definition hey? I’d bet when asked what are the most important things in life, those words listed above would sit in majority of people’s top 5 – to be comfortable, healthy, or happy.
Funnily enough, I think to achieve a state of “well-being ” you actually need to get comfortable being uncomfortable. From here, that’s when real comfort, happiness and health can thrive.
The importance of well-being and what that may actually look like is something Ravi and I choose to focus on in the clinic. Being well is not just a goal that you can kick and then move on to the next thing. It takes consistent effort. It is an accumulation of continuous, positive thoughts and actions, and all aspects of your world should be considered when thinking about your wellbeing. This means it isn’t just about your physical health, but your mental and social health too.
Working on your physical health is hard. It hurts. It’s uncomfortable.
I’m not going to lie, I would be super happy if I could do just 1 unassisted pull up or even just bend down to put my shoes on without letting out a painfully concerning groan (setting the bar high, I know). But for me to not only get there, but stay there, I need to put in consistent effort and actually get comfortable being uncomfortable. That means I need to get up early every morning to fit in a gym session or move my body.
For others, getting comfortable being uncomfortable could mean trying out a yoga class, giving different foods that positively fuel your body a go, or potentially giving up a habit such as smoking.
Taking care of your mental health is equally as important and also requires constant work! You will never talk to anyone as much as you talk to yourself, and if you know me, you know that I am constantly rambling. So make sure you are being kind to yourself. Start to do at least one thing a day that is good for your mind – go for a walk, jump in the ocean, stretch, read a book or listen to music, give journaling a go or practice some mindfulness – some of these things will feel uncomfortable initially, but stick with it, I promise it will get easier.
Socialising! Humans are social creatures, we need to interact with others. Make sure you are checking in with those you love, and also think about how certain interactions leave you feeling – surround yourself with people that lift you up to help create the best version of you.
The point I am trying to make, is that looking after your well-being is a goal post that is always on the move, and has many aspects to be considered. It is constantly showing up for yourself both physically and mentally, but the beautiful thing about it, is that it’s a journey most people aspire to take at some point.
So if you are ready to take that journey, but need a little guidance, Ravi and I are here and ready to help.
